Tina
Hi, I’m Tina from Japan, currently studying in the IBMBA program at National Sun Yat-sen University. What I’ve learned here is that the value of IBMBA really depends on the person, because this program gives you a lot of space and expects you to manage it yourself. If you’re independent, rational, and comfortable making decisions on your own, that space can become a real advantage. As an overseas Chinese student, I chose IBMBA knowing that it is not a program that constantly pushes or closely manages students. Instead, it offers a flexible environment where outcomes depend largely on how everyone chooses to use their time and energy. This means the experience can feel very different from person to person. For some students, especially those whose main goal is to earn a degree or take additional time before fully entering the workforce, this structure can feel comfortable and low-pressure. For others who prefer clear guidance, strong structure, or continuous external motivation, this environment may feel too open.
For me, this flexibility is the core feature of IBMBA. Being able to set my own priorities, decide where to focus effort, and manage my pace rationally allows me to use the program in a way that fits my personal goals. In that sense, IBMBA rewards self-management rather than dependence on the environment.
Courses are evaluated through multiple formats, including exams, reports, presentations, and peer reviews. While assignments can sometimes feel demanding, this variety allows different strengths to be recognized instead of relying on a single evaluation style.
Life in Kaohsiung is practical and easy to adapt to. The cost of living is relatively reasonable, and the slower pace of the city creates room to think and plan ahead. However, students who plan to cover tuition independently should be prepared for the financial responsibility that comes with graduate study.
Looking ahead, I plan to use this degree when applying for internationally related roles within Japanese companies. For anyone considering IBMBA—or any MBA program—I believe the most important step is understanding yourself first. This program offers a lot of freedom, but that freedom only becomes valuable for people who can use it consciously and deliberately.
IBMBA is not a program that carries you forward automatically. But for the right person, it is a space that can be used very effectively.
